When the GP Knows Best Until It’s Their Family
Bulk-Billing Medical Imaging Reality
There is an interesting trend quietly emerging in and around Bundaberg: when some GPs and specialists need imaging for their own families, they are preferring Voxel radiology. Yet when referring their patients, some appear quite happy to send them toward cheaper bulk-billing or corporate imaging services.
That raises an uncomfortable question:- Is the standard of care the same for the patient as it is for the doctor’s own family?
Patients deserve more than simply the cheapest available option. They deserve appropriate imaging, experienced radiologists, quality reporting and a service chosen with their clinical needs in mind.
Of course, bulk-billing and affordable healthcare play an important role, and cost matters to many patients. But if a doctor would choose one provider for Mum, Dad or the kids, shouldn’t the patient at least be given the same consideration?
Perhaps we need a new weather report-
“Today’s forecast 100% chance of referrals- with a strong possibility of double standards.”
Jokes aside, patients should be able to ask their doctor “Why are you recommending this imaging provider, and would you choose the same one for your own family?”
Because healthcare should not operate on the principle of “best for my family, cheapest for everyone else.”
I can’t complain about our fellow medical imaging professionals, but the Medicare rebate can be quite challenging. Some studies barely cover costs, and practices can even lose money. In some cases, you may have five students with one qualified sonographer supervising, while others may resort to cherry-picking easier or more profitable cases.( Bulk-Billing Medical Imaging Reality)
And if this trend continues, maybe the next specialist referral will come with a loyalty card “Ten bulk-billed scans and your eleventh comes with a free umbrella.” 😄
